The EPA is a government agency set up under the EPA Act 1992. It aims to promote and implement the highest practicable standards of environmental protection and management which embrace the principles of sustainable and balanced development.
Among its functions is a range of responsibilities in relation to environmental research. At the beginning of 2000 the Department of the Environment and Local Government (DoELG) provided a budget of ~@25.3m for environmental research over the period 2000-2006. This budget forms part of the Irish government's programme for Environmental Research, Technological Development and Innovation (ERTDI) funded under the National Development Plan (NDP) 2000-2006.
The NDP has also provided ~@6.3m for the establishment of a National Environmental Research Centre of Excellence to provide a more structured approach to research than at present and environmental assistance across the Community Support Framework (CSF). The multi-annual research programme being developed and managed by the EPA on behalf of the DoELG has four elements:
- Sub-measure 1 - Environmentally Sustainable Resources Management
- Sub-measure 2 - Sustainable Development
- Sub-measure 3 - Cleaner Production
- Sub-measure 4 - National Environmental Research Centre of Excellence.
Calls for proposals were made in 2000 and 2001 for research under sub-measures 1 and 2 and a number of research projects are underway as a result. A Cleaner/Greener Production Programme is also being implemented under sub-measure 3. A call for proposals on research relating to the Water Framework Directive will be announced in mid 2002. |
